Medicaid programs
- If your parent already gets Medicaid, their state may let a family member or friend become a paid caregiver. Many states call this a consumer-directed personal assistance program. Requirements and pay vary by state. (USA.gov: Disability and caregiver help)
- In Medicaid's self-directed services, the person getting care can have the authority to recruit, hire, train and supervise their own workers. (Medicaid.gov: Self-directed services)
Other routes USA.gov lists
- Long-term care insurance: some policies let family members get paid as caregivers. Ask the insurance agent for written confirmation of benefits.
- Paid family leave: some states have programs that pay you to care for a family member. Rules vary by state.
- For veterans: VA programs such as Veteran-Directed Home and Community Based Services and the Aid and Attendance benefit.
